Market Overview
Grain futures are finishing the week on a stronger note, led by a solid rebound in wheat after the market took a beating earlier this week.
Kansas City and Chicago wheat are now positioned to finish higher on the week, while corn is roughly steady. Traders are also beginning to shift their attention away from this week’s Midwest weather and toward next Wednesday’s USDA crop report, where yield and acreage adjustments could bring plenty of volatility.
🌦️ Weather & Crop Conditions
Weather concerns are becoming increasingly focused on the Plains.
Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota continue to face troublesome conditions, with North Dakota production estimates potentially taking a sizable hit from last month.
That could begin showing up in Monday’s crop-condition report.
Corn good-to-excellent ratings could:
Hold steady
Decline around 1%
Continue widening the gap versus last year’s crop ratings
While last year’s crop produced more than 186 bushels per acre, current conditions raise questions about whether USDA’s 183-bushel trendline yield is still realistic.
Historically, USDA’s August corn yield estimate moves by at least one bushel per acre. The big question Wednesday will be: which direction?
📊 Wednesday’s Crop Report
Next week’s report could be especially important because traders will receive updated yield estimates alongside fresh acreage information.
Current expectations generally point toward a modest reduction in corn yield, potentially around ½ bushel per acre.
Acreage could provide another surprise.
There is some speculation that corn acreage could increase slightly, but another possibility is slightly fewer corn acres and somewhat higher soybean acreage.
That combination makes Wednesday’s 11:00 a.m. report one to watch closely.
🌾 Wheat
Wheat is leading today’s grain rally as traders return their attention to the Black Sea.
Grain movement remains severely restricted, and there currently appears to be little
